South Scotland MSP Colin Smyth has welcomed the news that Alpha Solway in Annan has secured a £53 million contract to make PPE equipment for the NHS until summer 2021.

The company will provide 232 million surgical face masks, two million visors and six million respiratory masks for NHS Scotland.

Colin Smyth said, “This is a badly needed jobs boost for Dumfriesshire but also highlights the fact this terrible virus won’t be eliminated anytime soon and the demand for PPE in our NHS and beyond will continue for the foreseeable future”.

“Although this won’t scratch the surface of the huge number of jobs being lost and is only a short term contract, it will nonetheless help mitigate some of the economic downturn in the area and all credit to Alpha Solway for securing this badly needed work. The key now is to ensure other businesses in the area are supported to boost employment, as this health crisis continues to develop into a growing economic crisis for our region”.
